David Shapiro is a highly experienced bio-pharmaceutical executive and consultant. Most recently, Dr. Shapiro served on the board of directors of Galecto Inc., now Damora Therapeutics, Inc. (DMRA) and Yaqrit Discovery Ltd, a liver disease company. He was previously the Chief Medical Officer and Head of R&D at Intercept Pharmaceuticals, where he was instrumental in establishing the regulatory approval pathway for the first new treatment for primary biliary cholangitis in two decades and advancing late-stage development for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). He previously served as CMO at Idun Pharmaceuticals (acquired by Pfizer) and as President of the Scripps Medical Research Center at Scripps Clinic and has held senior roles at several biotechnology companies. Earlier, he led Merck’s hypertension clinical research program. Dr. Shapiro received his medical degree from Dundee University and trained in general and respiratory medicine in Oxford and at the University of Vermont. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London, the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine and the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease.
